California Pregnancy Disability Leave Now Entitled to Four Months of Extended Health Coverage
California has upped the benefits for employees this week with SB 299, which extends group health coverage to employees on pregnancy disability leave for up to four months. Employers with 5 or more employees must continue to offer any group health coverage in place at the start of the leave.
There can be no changes: if the employer is paying 100%, it must continue to do so. If the employer pays a portion, it must continue to do so, although it can require the employee to keep up her share of the premiums while out on leave.
Previous to SB 299, employees generally were required to only continue benefits for 3 months.
The full text of the bill, in glorious legalese, can be found here.
